Ndanga District Hospital Maternity Ward Faces Crisis Amidst Resource Shortage

# **Ndanga District Hospital Maternity Ward Faces Crisis Amidst Resource Shortage**

*By Chiwara Lawson*

The maternity ward at Ndanga District Hospital is currently grappling with a crisis due to an overwhelming surge in mothers seeking maternity care. The strain on both staff and resources at this government-run institution has reached critical levels. Remarkably, patients are not required to make payments for the services rendered, which further exacerbates the situation.

The hospital administrator expresses deep concern over the lack of resources available to meet the increasing demand for maternal healthcare services. Midwives, who tirelessly serve at the hospital, find themselves stretched thin as they strive to provide quality care amidst these challenging circumstances.

Dr. B. Takaidza, the District Medical Officer of Zaka District, was unavailable for comment during the Easter holidays. However, Mr. Zimbwa, the District Administrator, was also unavailable for comment, while the Matron on Cover could not respond to administrative matters.

The institution has reported a mismatch between patient influx and available resources. The hospital struggles to balance the stakes between local and foreign patients from other districts. Resource constraints, particularly in terms of consumables during and after delivery, pose significant challenges for the institution. Maternity mothers receive services free of charge, with the understanding that the Result Based Fund (RBF) would cover their consumables. However, no funds are currently available under the RBF, and even when released, they are in the RTGS component, which, due to the hyperinflationary environment, won't amount to much.

In response to this critical situation, stakeholders—including the District Medical Officer of Zaka District and the Matron of Ndanga District Hospital—have been called upon to collaboratively assess and address the pressing resource shortage.
