Distracted Walking Blamed for Teen's Tragic Death

*Distracted Walking Blamed for Teen's Tragic Death*

A 17-year-old ZIMSEC Form 4 learner was killed by a speeding car last week  as he was crossing the road with his headphones on. The incident happened at around midday, near Padare shops, in Zaka.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim, identified as Tafadzwa Masocha, was walking home from weekend lessons, when he decided to cross the road without looking. He was listening to music on his headphones, and did not hear the car horn or the shouts that ensued. The driver of the car, tried to brake, but it was too late. He hit Tafadzwa with full force, sending him flying several meters away.

The people at the scene shortly after, could not save Tafadzwa's life. He was pronounced dead on the spot. Tafadzwa's family and friends are devastated by his death, and have described him as a bright and cheerful student. He was preparing for his ZIMSEC exams, thus he had been coming from weekend lessons organized by the school .

His teachers and classmates have also expressed their shock and sorrow, and have paid tribute to his academic achievements and leadership skills.

The police have issued a statement, urging pedestrians and cyclists to be more careful on the road, and to avoid wearing headphones or earphones while crossing the street. They have also warned drivers to slow down and respect the traffic rules, especially near schools and residential areas. They have said that this tragic accident could have been prevented, if both parties had been more alert and responsible.

Distracted walking is a term that refers to the practice of walking while using a device or engaging in an activity that distracts one's attention from the surroundings. Distracted walking can increase the risk of accidents, injuries, and even death for pedestrians and other road users.

According to the World Health Organization, more than 270,000 pedestrians die each year on the world's roads, accounting for 22% of all road traffic.

In Zimbabwe, there are no specific campaigns that target distracted walking as a major pedestrian safety issue.

However, there are some general campaigns that promote road safety awareness and education for all road users, including pedestrians. For example, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) runs various programs and activities, such as road shows, workshops, seminars, and media campaigns, to disseminate information and messages on road safety.
