"The Eternal Vigil: God's Unwavering Watch
"The Eternal Vigil: God's Unwavering Watch"
By Chiwara Lawson
God, the Creator, was exhausted, His divine energy drained from sustaining the universe for eternity.
He had witnessed the birth and death of stars, the rise and fall of civilizations, and the joys and sorrows of His children. He had loved them all, but also felt their pain and suffering, endured their prayers and curses, their praise and blasphemy, their faith and doubt. God longed for a moment of rest, a brief escape from His endless responsibilities.
"I wonder what it would be like to close My eyes and drift into oblivion, to let go of My control and trust in My creation," God thought to Himself, His mind weary from the weight of eternity. "I wonder if I would dream, and what I would dream of. I wonder if I would wake up, and what I would find when I did."
But God knew He could not sleep. He was God, after all. He was the source of all existence, the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end. He was the one who set the laws of nature in motion, who gave life to every living thing, who breathed spirit into every soul. He was the one who maintained the delicate balance of order and chaos, who upheld justice and mercy, who guarded against evil and sin.
"I cannot sleep, for if I did, the very fabric of existence would unravel," God said to Himself, His voice echoing through the chambers of His heart, which transcended the boundaries of time and space. "The universe would collapse into nothingness, the planets would crumble into dust, the stars would fade into darkness. The creatures would lose their vitality, the plants would wither away, the animals would perish. The humans would forget their identity, their morality, their destiny. They would wander aimlessly in a world without meaning, without hope, without Me."
God could not sleep, because He loved them too much. He loved them more than they could ever imagine, more than they could ever love Him back. He loved them despite their flaws, their mistakes, their sins. He loved them even when they ignored Him, rejected Him, betrayed Him. His love was unwavering, unrelenting, and unconditional, spanning across eternity and infinity.
"I cannot sleep, because I have a promise to keep," God reminded Himself, His eyes fixed on the future, yet simultaneously beholding the past and present, for He was the Lord of all time. "I have promised to return one day, to judge the living and the dead, to reward the faithful and punish the wicked, to restore My kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. I have promised to wipe away every tear from their eyes, to heal every wound in their hearts, to fill every void in their souls. I have promised to make all things new, to create a new heaven and a new earth, where there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain."
God could not sleep, because He was waiting for that day, which was already present in His eternal now. He was waiting for the day when He would see His children face to face, when He would embrace them with His arms of love, when He would welcome them into His eternal home. He was waiting for the day when He would finally hear them say those words that He longed to hear:
"Thank you."
"I love you."
"Well done."
"I am waiting for the day when I will finally say: 'It is finished.' And then… Maybe then… I can sleep, My heart at peace, My love fulfilled, My glory revealed in all its splendor, for I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the One who was, who is, and who is to come."
